Admission

Midland College maintains an open door admissions policy that ensures every person who can benefit from postsecondary education has the opportunity to enroll.  Midland College prohibits discrimination, including harassment, against any student on the basis of sex, gender, race, color, national origin, religion, or disability.

Student Category

Application requirements vary depending on a student’s educational goals and academic history.  To ensure timely enrollment and registration, select the student category carefully.  Midland College reserves the right to update the student category based on submitted information and student goals. 

High School Graduate

Graduates from accredited Texas high schools or equivalent institutions are eligible for admission. Proof of high school graduation is required and must be documented.

Students with an Official Certificate of High School Equivalency

Students may be admitted upon satisfactory completion of the High School Equivalency examination. The Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency with the official test scores is required for admission.

Graduates of a Home School or a Non-Accredited High School

Any student who has completed a home school program or has graduated from a non-accredited high school is eligible to apply for admission to Midland College.  A completed copy of the student’s transcript signed and notarized by the principal or head of instruction, showing the last semester’s grades and date of graduation are required. For those students who are seeking Title IV Financial Aid, additional information may be required.

Returning Students

If you were formerly enrolled at MC and have not attended for one long session during the last 12 months, the State of Texas requires you to complete a new application.  Additional documents may also be required.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are required to provide official copies of all transcripts from every college or university previously attended. As transcripts are received for degree-seeking students they are evaluated in the Registrar’s Office. A copy of that evaluation is sent to the student at the address recorded in the student file. Continued enrollment is contingent on receipt of all official transcripts.  Transcripts should be sent electronically, institution to institution, via EDI or SPEEDE if those services are available.

Transient Students

Transient students are regularly enrolled and seeking a degree at another college or university.  Transient students intend to earn credit at Midland College and transfer it back to their home institution.

Dual Credit Students

Midland College has entered into agreements with various school districts allowing high school students to earn both high school and college credit for selected courses. For more information, students should contact their high school counselors.

Early College High School Students

Midland College, in partnership with Midland Independent School District, offers an early college high school. The high school starts with the 9th grade and is housed on the Midland College campus. Students begin taking dual credit courses in the second semester of their freshman year. Students must be eligible for dual credit and are selected through a process determined by the Midland Independent School District.

Early Admissions Students

Early Admissions students are high school students between the ages of 16 to 18 who may earn college credit that is not counted as high school credit.  Midland College will admit early admissions students on the basis of individual merit with school district and/or parental permission. Early Admission students are not eligible for developmental courses, unless they have completed the required high school requirement for math, reading, and/or writing for graduation.

International Students

International students are welcome at Midland College. Admission is contingent upon evaluation of the completed application packet and Midland College’s ability to serve the individual’s needs.

Compliance with all requirements and procedures established for visa category by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service is required.  International Students with an F-1 visa must enroll in and maintain 12 credit hours during fall and spring terms and must be in at least 9 credit hours of traditional/face to face coursework.  Failure to maintain these requirements will result in the termination of the student’s I-20.

Individual Approval

Individuals who are 18 years of age or older and do not meet other student category requirements may be admitted without examination at the discretion of Student Services administrators. Individual approval applicants are not eligible to receive Title IV federal financial assistance

Casual (non-degree seeking) Students

Students not intending to seek a degree or a certificate or planning to transfer to another college or university are eligible to attend Midland College.  Students admitted as casual may not take academically restricted courses or more than two courses during each term.  Education records will be required if a student later elects to seek a degree, certificate, or award of credit.

State Enrollment Requirements

Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Requirements

Prior to enrollment, Texas public institutions of higher education are required to assess all non-exempt first-time degree seeking college students under the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) using the TSI Assessment.

Bacterial Meningitis

Texas State Law SB 1107 mandates that all entering students under the age of 22 provide a certificate signed by a health care provider or an official immunization record verifying vaccination against bacterial meningitis, or receipt of a booster during the five years prior to registration and at least 10 days before the first day of the semester. Bacterial meningitis vaccinations and boosters must be administered by a health practitioner authorized by law to administer an immunization.  Entering students include those entering college for the first time, transfer students from other colleges, and returning or continuing students who have had a break in enrollment of at least one fall or spring semester.

Students who fail to submit certified proof of vaccination or a valid booster within the required time-frame will be unable to attend classes and will be dropped.

Denial of Participation in College Courses

The Midland College Chief of Police will review all Institution of Higher Education Sex Offender Notifications that are submitted within the required seven days.   If it is determined that participation is permissible under applicable law and poses no threat to the college community, the applicant will be allowed to register for classes.  If an applicant is denied participation, the individual may appeal the decision in accordance with the College’s grievance policy.

Program Specific Admission Information

Admission to Midland College does not guarantee entrance to specific programs and courses.  Selective admissions requirements vary by program. Students are encouraged to consult with their assigned pathways advisor for more information on these programs.

Background Checks

Certain courses of study require that a background check, including criminal record history, be conducted on the applicant. If a background check is required, the applicant will be required to sign a consent form.  If the applicant refuses to sign the consent form, or, if the results of the background check indicate the applicant is not eligible for admission, admission into the courses and/or program will not be offered to the applicant. 

Other Immunization Requirements
Midland College students enrolled in certain health science programs and for those who live in on-campus housing may be required to show proof of other immunizations against communicable diseases. Students should contact the program and housing web pages for additional information.

 

Assessment

Students not meeting the passing standard of one or more sections of the TSIA are required to take courses to become college ready.  Developmental courses are selected based on scores and educational and career goals.

Advising

Transfer/Degree/Certificate Seeking Students

Midland College strongly recommends all students be advised by their assigned pathways advisors.  Some students may be required to see their pathways advisors before class registration. Web registration access maybe blocked until cleared by an advisor.

Dual Credit Students

Dual credit students are encouraged to consult with their high school counselors and Midland College Pathways Advisors regarding course selection based on long term career and college goals.

Transient Students

Transient students should consult with their home university or college advisors.  Receiving institutions have final say on transfer credit and applicability.  For pre-requisite issues, students are encouraged to consult the transient advisor by completing the pre-requisite help form

 

Registration

Registering for Classes

Students may register for classes by:

  • Making an appointment with their assigned pathways advisors;
  • Meeting with an advisor at the WRTTC;
  • Logging into the online My MC Portal.

Dates and Calendars

Mode of Instruction

Face to Face
Face to face or traditional classes have the instructor and students meeting in the classroom or another in-person setting.
 
Interactive video
Live (two-way, video/audio) instruction occurs with the students and instructor in different locations.  While in separate locations, the schedule is traditional with set dates/times.
 
Distance Learning
Distance learning is a course delivery format in which the majority of the instruction occurs when students and instructors are not in the same place.  There are a variety of distance learning formats.  Computer access and reliable internet service are required.  Secure login and password, proctored examinations (sometimes at an additional cost to the student), and other technologies are used to ensure it is the student who is participating, completing the work, and receiving credit.  Find more information here.
 
  • Online-Instruction occurs over the Internet. Proctoring (sometimes at an additional cost) is required in most courses.
  • Hybrid-Instruction occurs in both the classroom and online environments.
  • Virtual College of Texas-Midland College is a member of the Virtual College of Texas (VCT). With approval of the division dean, a Midland College student may enroll in an Internet course that is not offered at Midland College.  Students may view the schedule at Virtual College of Texas.  VCT enrollments must be made through the Midland College VCT Coordinator.

Student Success

All entering first time in college students who have fewer than 12 post high school graduation college credit hours and who have met two or more sections of TSI, will be required to take EDUC 1100. The course is designed to help students adjust to college and become effective learners.

Midland College requires that students who are deficient in two or more areas of the TSI assessment be enrolled into PREP 0370 during their first semester attending Midland College.

Developmental Education

Developmental Education courses are designed to strengthen students’ basic skills in reading, writing, and math in order to achieve academic success in college level coursework.

NCBM 0111 is designed for students who score below the minimum level for the Math Pathway class, MATH 0481 or MATH 0482 . This 16-hour math course provides support so that students may enroll in a non-STEM MATH 0481 or STEM MATH 0482 .  After the successful completion of this support course and successful completion MATH 0481 , students will be deemed TSI complete and may enroll in MATH 1332 or MATH 1342. After successful completion of this support course and successful completion of MATH 0482 , students will be TSI complete for all entry level math pathways.
