Health Services Management (Bachelor of Applied Science)

The Health Services Management (HSM) program consists of a comprehensive curriculum based on workforce competencies for the management of health services in hospitals, insurance companies, public health organizations , Health Technology, Data Analytics and Informatics, and other organizations. All junior- and senior-level courses (MHSM) are offered fully online.


Because HSM continues to expand, courses were developed to address interdisciplinary needs for patient care reporting and facility management, with specialization in areas of health information management, interoperability and data mining, healthcare informatics, healthcare reporting and financial decision-making.  The program also includes current healthcare policy, federal and accreditation regulations, financial and revenue management, personnel management, and information governance.  Specialty tracks include (Effective December 2019, Midland College will be phasing out the Health Information Management track):

  • Healthcare Administration - Prepares graduates to analyze healthcare operational needs and develop effective approaches and solutions while drawing upon an interdisciplinary perspective.  The Healthcare Administration curriculum provides financial and strategic business courses for management of health services for health services groups, hospitals, and other health service organizations.
  • Health Information Management - Prepares graduates for work responsibilities involving decision-making for health data management/governance.  The student will develop competence within the framework of a well-rounded management curriculum. Effective December 2019, Midland College will be phasing out the Health Information Management track. 
  • Health Informatics - Prepares graduates for a liaison role in improving quality through technology usage, coupled with workflow efficiency and understanding of regulatory and standards and skills in data operations.


Program Admission Requirements:

In order to be admitted, students must

  1. Meet all College admission requirements.
  2. Complete a program admission application.
  3. Have an approved Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree or equivalent.  Approved AAS degrees include those in the fields of health sciences, allied health, nursing, information technology or business.  (Students who have completed an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree may seek entrance to the program after completing 30 credit hours of approved technical specialty coursework.  See Department Chair for additional information.)

Priority in the admission process is granted for: 

  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • Core Curriculum courses completed prior to submission of the application
  • Health services management work experience
  • Veteran’s status


Completion Requirements:

To receive a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Health Services Management, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:

  1. Have an approved Associate in Applied Science (AAS) or equivalent.
  2. Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours as follows:
    1. 33 credit hours of approved technical specialty coursework drawn from the associate degree, and
    2. 42 credit hours of required Core Curriculum Requirements  coursework, and
    3. 45 credit hours of upper level coursework.
  3. Complete a minimum of 30 upper level credit hours required for the degree through instruction at Midland College.
  4. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 for college-level coursework that applies to the degree.
  5. Have a grade of “C” or better in each approved technical specialty course and each junior and senior level course.
