Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education and Literacy (AEL) offers a variety of programs to help adults increase their academic and workforce skills.  Students are provided with the opportunity to improve their skills in reading, math, science, social studies, language arts, and English. GED and ESL classes are held at various locations including the main campus, Cogdell Learning Center and at the WRTTC in Fort Stockton. Online GED classes are also available. GED classes, ESL classes, and other Adult Basic Education services are provided to students at no charge. An enrollment and orientation class is required before students enter the instructional classes. Call the AEL Department at (432) 685-4700 for procedures and documentation requirements.

GED® Classes

These classes are designed for persons who have not completed high school. Men and women study individual materials that are on their own level and progress at their own speed. Students preparing to take the GED® test are given instruction in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science through instructor-led, computer-assisted, and independent study. Classes for preparation to take the GED test are available to students who are 16 years of age and older.  Students who are 16 years old must have a court order and parent/guardian permission to be eligible for GED classes at Midland College.  Students who are 17- and 18-years-old must have parent permission to enroll in GED classes at Midland College.  

In order to receive a Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency, a student must pass all four sections of the GED test. The four sections of the test include Science, Social Studies, Math, and Language Arts. Call (432) 685-4700 for more information.

GED® (High School Equivalency) Testing

Midland College offers the GED® test for those who have not completed a formal high school education. The successful completion of the GED® test secures a certificate of high school equivalency and enables students to enter college and pursue a college degree.

The GED® test is administered in Room 260 (Testing Center) of the Scharbauer Student Center. In order to receive a Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency, a student must pass all four sections of the GED test. Advance registration is required. English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL (English as a Second Language), refers to the study of English by non-native speakers. Classes provide students with the opportunity to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening English language skills. These skills are taught in conjunction with life skills to help the student function fully in the community. Multiple levels of instruction are available. Integrated Education Training (IET)

For students enrolled in GED and ESL classes at Midland College, Integrated Education Training (IET) provides an opportunity for students to enroll in credit career courses while finishing their GED Test Preparation studies or building their English Language Proficiency. TOEFL Classes

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) courses provide non-native English speakers the opportunity to study and prepare for their TOEFL exam. This test is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. Foreign Transcript Translation and Evaluation

Students with transcripts from foreign universities may be eligible for transcript translation and evaluation. Call (432) 685-5817 for more information.

Workforce Preparation Classes 

Workforce Preparation Classes are available to students in ESL and GED courses at Midland College. These classes help students prepare a resume and cover letter. These classes will also help prepare students with mock interviews and prepare students for navigating online and digital employment databases. Call (432) 685-5817 for more information.
