General Requirement for Degrees
Degree requirements must be completed within four years of start of program. Students who do not finish within the time limit must complete requirements of a catalog that is within the four-year period.
The requirements listed below are general expectations; programs may have additional requirements. Further, all programs have specific course requirements that are published in the Programs of Study section of this Catalog and Student Handbook.
To receive a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Early Childhood Education, a student must:
1. Have an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT), Early Childhood - 3 option, or equivalent;
2. Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours as follows:
a. 60 credit hours drawn from AAT degree, including 42 credit hours of required Core Curriculum
coursework, and
b. 7 credit hours of approved additional lower level coursework, and
c. 53 credit hours of upper level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at Midland
College.
4. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.75 for college-level coursework that applies to the degree.
5. Have a grade of “C” or better in each course included in the BAS-ECE program curriculum.
To receive a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree, a student must:
1. Have an approved Associate in Applied Science or equivalent
2. Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours as follows:
a. 33 credit hours of approved technical specialty coursework drawn from the associate degree,
and
c. 45 credit hours of upper level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at Midland
College.
4. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 for college-level coursework that applies to the degree.
5. Have a grade of “C” or better in each approved technical specialty course and each junior and
senior level course.
To receive a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree, a student must:
1. Have an approved Associate in Applied Science or equivalent.
2. Complete a minimum of 120 credit hours as follows:
a. 30 credit hours of approved technical specialty coursework drawn from the associate degree
or approved leveling coursework,
c. 48 credit hours of upper level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at Midland
College.
4. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 for college-level coursework that applies to the degree.
5. Have a grade of “C” or better in each approved technical specialty course and each junior and
senior level course.
To receive the Associate of Arts in General Studies (AA) degree, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete a minimum of 60 semester credit hours as follows:
b . An additional 9 credit hours consisting of at least one course in Social and Behavioral Sciences
and at least two courses chosen from the following:
• Social and Behavioral Sciences (A maximum of two courses in Social and Behavioral Sciences
may be taken in fulfillment of this requirement.)
• Business (transfer courses)
• Visual and Performing Arts
• Humanities
• Speech
• Communications
• Languages
• Philosophy
c. An additional 9 semester credit hours of transfer college credit coursework.
Note: Courses cannot be used to satisfy both the Core Curriculum requirements and this
requirement.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive the Associate of Science in General Studies (AS) degree, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete a minimum of 60 semester credit hours as follows:
b. An additional 9 semester credit hours/three courses in:
• Mathematics and/or
• Life and Physical Sciences.
c. An additional 9 semester credit hours of transfer college credit courses.
Note: Courses cannot be used to satisfy both the Core Curriculum requirements and this
requirement.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive the Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete all course requirements in the degree program including the Core Curriculum.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete all course requirements in one of the degree programs including General Education
requirements.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive the Associate of Science (AS) in Criminal Justice degree, a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete all course requirements in the degree program including the Core Curriculum.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 2% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Engineering a student must satisfy the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative and:
1. Complete all course requirements in the degree program including General Education
requirements.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
3. Complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction at
Midland College.
To receive a certificate, a student must:
1. Complete all course requirements in the certificate program.
2. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.00 (“C”) on college-level coursework.
With the following stipulations, students may obtain additional associate’s degrees.
Students may not receive more than one of the following:
- Associate of Arts in General Studies
- Associate of Science in General Studies
- Associate of Arts in Teaching
A student who has received one of the above may obtain an AAS by completing all degree requirements.
A student who has received an AAS may obtain an additional AAS in a different six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code by completing all degree requirements.
A student who has received a BAS may obtain an additional BAS in a different major by completing all degree requirements.
