Health Information Management

Are  you ready to enter a growing healthcare field that combines technology, data management, and patient care support? The Midland College Health Information Management (HIM) program prepares you for careers in managing health data, medical coding, and healthcare information systems in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings.

Midland College offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and two certificates, Medical Coding Specialist (MCS) and Health Data Coordinator (HDC). 

The Associate degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates of the A.A.S. program may sit for the Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) national certification exam.

All specialty courses (HITT) are offered fully online except of the Professional Practice Experience (PPE) course which may require in-person attendance at a health care facility.

The Medical Coding Specialist (MCS) certificate prepares students to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification exam through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This is a Level I certificate.

The Health Data Coordinator (HDC) certificate prepares students for entry level positions managing insurance, pre-authorizations, scheduling, and office positions in hospitals and clinics.  This is a Level I certificate.

Program Admission - AAS

To be admitted into either certificate pathway, students must:
  1. College Admission
    • Apply to Midland College and meet all general admission requirements.
  2. Complete the Health Information Management Application.
  3. Satisfy TSI requirements.
  4. Review and sign Program Student Handbook.

Returning students must:

  1. Resubmit the Health Information Management Application if it has been one calendar year or more since enrollment in an HIM course.
  2. If it has been five or more years since enrollment in an HIM course, the following courses must be retaken with a minimum grade of “C”:
  • HITT 1205, Medical Terminology
  • BIOL 2404, Anatomy and Physiology 

Program Admission - Certificates (MCS or HDC)

  1. College Admission

    • Apply to Midland College and meet all general admission requirements.
  2. Complete the Health Information Management Application.
  3. Review and sign Program Student Handbook.

Returning students must:

  1. Resubmit the Health Information Management Application if it has been one calendar year or more since enrollment in an HIM course.
  2. If it has been five or more years since enrollment in an HIM course, the following courses must be retaken with a minimum grade of “C”:
  • HITT 1205, Medical Terminology
  • BIOL 2404, Anatomy and Physiology (required for MCS students only).

Completion Requirements:

To receive an AAS degree in Health Information Management, a student must:

  • Complete a minimum of 60 credit hours as follows:
    • 15 credit hours of required General Education Requirements Coursework, and
    • 45 credit hours of specialty coursework
  • Complete, at minimum, 25% of degree credit hours through instruction at Midland College
  • Complete all courses with a “C” or better
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.0 or better

To receive a MCS or HDC Certificate, a student must:

  • Complete a minimum of
    • 34 credit hours of specialty coursework for the MCS
    • 17 credit hours of specialty coursework for the HDC
  • Complete, at minimum, 25% of certificate credit hours through instruction at Midland College
  • Complete all courses with a “C” or better
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.0 or better
