Substance Abuse Counseling

Midland College offers multiple pathways for students interested in substance abuse and chemical dependency counseling, allowing you to enter the field quickly and continue advancing your career over time.

The Patient Intake Certificate is an entry-level option designed for students who want to begin working in the field and build foundational skills. This certificate prepares students for positions that do not require licensure or a college degree, such as intake assistants, residential aides, or technician roles. It also serves as a direct pathway into the Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern (LCDC-I) certificate and the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.

The Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern Certificate qualifies graduates to apply for registration as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern (LCDC-I) in the State of Texas for up to five years. This option is ideal for students who want to begin working quickly, plan to work in treatment facilities or non-profit agencies, or do not yet seek full licensure.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Substance Abuse Counseling prepares students for full licensure as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) in Texas. To obtain licensure, students must complete the AAS degree, earn 4,000 hours of paid internship experience, and pass the state licensing exam.

Refer to the Texas Department of State Health Services website for licensure requirements.

Students may transfer a maximum of six semester credit hours of SAC classes from another accredited college. To enroll in the practicum courses DAAC 2166 , DAAC 2167 , and DAAC 2271 , students must take at least six semester credit hours of SAC classes from Midland College as determined by the Substance Abuse Counseling Program Chair.
