The Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education (BAS-ECE) includes upper-division courses that prepare students to be lead classroom teachers, teacher aides or program specialists in early childhood education private school settings, afterschool programs and early childhood centers such as Early Head Start, Head Start, non-profit preschools, and private infant/toddler programs. Graduates may also seek teacher certification through an approved alternative educator certification program. The College is seeking approval of the program to provide teacher certification directly as an additional option for students.
Program Admission Requirements:
In order to be admitted to the upper-level courses in the BAS-ECE, students must:
- Complete an application to MC or be or have been enrolled at MC;
- Complete the MC AAT degree or equivalent;
- Have a 2.75 grade point average or better on the most recently completed 60 credit hours of college-level coursework;
- Submit a program specific application form;
- Submit official transcripts of coursework completed at other institution(s) of higher education; and
- Successfully complete an evaluation of the writing sample included in the application and an interview with the program representatives.
Provisional Admission. Students who are within 9 credit hours of completion of the Early Childhood Education option of the MC AAT degree or equivalent plus the additional seven credit hours of specified content courses and who meet other admission requirements may enroll, but must complete all lower-level coursework by the end of the second semester of the program. Subsequent enrollment in upper-level BAS ECE courses is contingent upon completion of the Early Childhood Education option of the MC AAT degree or equivalent plus the additional seven credit hours of specified content courses.
Background Checks. Students who enroll in this program are required to undergo an annual background check with each entity where field-based experiences and practica are conducted.
As required by TEC §22.083, individuals who intend to seek Texas teacher certification, must undergo a criminal history background check prior to employment as an educator. An individual may be ineligible for the issuance of a Texas teacher certificate if they have been convicted of an offense. A person may request a preliminary criminal history evaluation letter regarding potential ineligibility for certification due to a conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony or misdemeanor offense.
Note: A social security number is required to apply for standard certification.
Program Completion Requirements:
- Complete all program coursework;
- Maintain a 2.75 G.P.A. in program coursework with a C or better in each course in the program through the fourth semester;
- Demonstrate proficiency on the Professional Dispositions for Educators;
- Successfully complete ELED 4601, Practicum; and
- Attain a C or better in EDTP 4210, The Intentional Teacher.
