Midland College offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and two certificates, Medical Coding Specialist (MCS) and Health Data Coordinator (HDC) in Health Information Management.
The Associate degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Students completing the AAS are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) national certification. All specialty courses (HITT) are offered solely online except for the Professional Practice Experience (PPE) course which may require in-person attendance at a health care facility.
The MCS certificate prepares students to take the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification exam through American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This is a Level I certificate.
The HDC certificate prepares students for entry level positions managing insurance, reauthorizations, scheduling, and office positions in hospitals and clinics. This is a Level I certificate.
Admission Requirements - AAS
In order to be admitted into the AAS program students must:
- Meet all College admission requirements
- Submit a Health Sciences Division Online Application and check the box for Health Information Management AAS Program.
- Complete the HIM Information Packet
- Complete TSI requirements.
- Review and sign the HIM Student Handbook and Health Sciences Policy and Procedure Manual
- Returning students must reapply to the HIM program if they have not enrolled in an HIM program course within a calendar year. Returning students that have not enrolled in an HIM program course within 5 years will need to retake HITT 1205 Medical Terminology and BIOL 2404 Anatomy and Physiology and earn a “C” or better.
- For any new students, transfer credit will apply for HITT 1205 (or equivalent) and BIOL 2404 (or equivalent) if the final grade is a “C” or better and the courses were completed within five years of program admittance.

In order to be admitted into one of the certificate degree paths students must:
- Meet all College admission requirements
- Submit a Health Sciences Division Online Application and check the box for either Medical Coding Specialist Certificate or Health Data Coordinator Certificate.
- Complete the HIM Information Packet
- Review and sign the HIM Student Handbook
- Returning students must reapply to the HIM program if they have not completed an HIM program course within a calendar year. Returning students that have not completed an HIM program course within 5 years will need to retake HITT 1205 Medical Terminology and BIOL 2404 Anatomy and Physiology (only required for MCS) and earn a “C” or better.
- For any new students, transfer credit will apply for HITT 1205 (or equivalent) and BIOL 2404 (or equivalent, and only required for MCS) if the final grade is a “C” or better and the courses were completed within five years of program admittance.
Completion of Requirements:
To receive an AAS degree in HIM, a student must:
- Complete a minimum of 60 credit hours as follows:
- 15 credit hours of required General Education Requirements Coursework, and
- 45 credit hours of specialty coursework
- Complete, at minimum, 25% of degree credit hours through instruction at Midland College
- Complete all courses with a “C” or better
- Have an overall GPA of 2.0 or better
To receive a MCS or HDC Certificate, a student must:
- Complete a minimum of
- 34 credit hours of specialty coursework for the MCS
- 17 credit hours of specialty coursework for the HDC
- Complete, at minimum, 25% of certificate credit hours through instruction at Midland College
- Complete all courses with a “C” or better
- Have an overall GPA of 2.0 or better
